Question :    If a car is running with a speed of 60 km/h, then how much distance will it cover in 15 minute 20 second?

Correct Answer  15 1/3 km or 15.33 km

Solution & Explanation

Solution

Given, speed = 60 km/h

Time = 15 minute 20 second

Thus, distance covered in the given time = ?

Calculation of distance using formula

Here, since time is given in the minute and second, thus we need to change the time into hour. Because while calculation, the unit of all the statistics should be uniform.

Here, given, time = 15 minute 20 second

Thus, to change this time into hour, we need to divide minute by 60 and second by 3600

Thus, 15 minute 20 second

= 15/60 hour + 20 1 / 60 3 × 60 hour

= 15 1 / 60 4 + 1/180 hour

= 45 + 1/180

= 46 23/ 180 90 hour = 23/90 hour

Thus, time = 23/90 hour

And given speed = 60 km/h

Now, we know that

Distance = Speed × Time

= 60 2 km/h × 23/ 90 3 hour

= 23 × 2/3 km

= 46/3 km

= 15 1/3 km or 15.33 km

Thus, distance covered by the car in the given time = 15 1/3 km or 15.33 km Answer

Calculation of distance after converting the unit of speed as per unit of given time using Unitary Method

Here, time = 15 minute 20 second

= 15 × 60 second + 20 second

= 900 + 20 = 920 second

Thus, time = 920 second

And, given speed = 60 km/h

This means, in 3600 second, the distance covered = 60 km

Now, ∵ In 3600 second, distance covered by the car = 60 km

∴ In 1 second, the distance covered by the car = 60/3600 km

∴ In 920 second, the distance covered by the given car = 60 1 / 3600 60 × 920 km

= 920/60 km = 92 46/ 6 3 km

= 15 1/3 km or 15.33 km

Thus, distance covered by the car in the given time = 15 1/3 km or 15.33 km Answer

Calculation of distance after bifurcating the given time

Given, time = 15 minute 20 second

= 15 minute + 20/60 minute

= 15 minute + 1/3 minute

Given, speed = 60 km/h

This, means the car covers 60 km in 60 minute [∵ 1 hour = 60 minute]

Thus, in 1 minute car travels a distance of 1 km

That means, the speed = 1 km/minute

Now, since Distance = Speed × Time

= 1 × (15 + 1/3 km

= 15 + 1/3 km

= 45 + 1/3 = 46/3 km

= 15 1/3 km = 15.33 km

Thus, distance covered by the car in the given time = 15 1/3 km or 15.33 km Answer
