Concept of Percentage


Percentage = Per + Cent

The meaning of 'Cent' is 'Century', i.e. 'Hundred'

Thus, 'percent' means per hundred.

In other words, amount or number in per hundred.

Here, 'percent' and 'percentage' are synonym, i.e. both have same meaning.

Hundredth part

Concept of 'percent' or 'percentage' is based on 'hundredth part'.

Hundredth part means, Out of hundred equal parts, each part is called its 'Hundredth Part'.

Therefore,

Hence, by saying a certain ‘percent’ or ‘percentage’ it means ‘that many’ hundredths.

That is how many in hundredths.

Expression of percentage:

Percentage is expressed by a symbol ‘%’.

Example

10%, 20%, 5%, 9%, 25%, m%, y%, q%, x%, etc.

(1) If we say 10%, this means 10 per hundred

(2) If we say 5%, this means that 5 per hundred

(3) If we say 25%, this means that 25 per hundred

(4) If we say 30%, this means that 30 per hundred

Similarly,

(5) If we say m%, this means ‘m’ per hundred

(6) If we say ‘x%’ this means ‘x’ per hundred.

(7) If we say ‘y%’, this means ‘y’ per hundred.

Conversion of Percentage into Fraction

Steps:

(1) Remove the sign of percent or percentage (%)

(2) Divide the given number by 100

(3) Do required calculation

(4) Result will be answer

Examples:

(1) Convert into fraction

(1) Remove the sign of percent or percentage (%)

= 5

(2) Divide the given number by 100

(3) Do required calculation

[Since there is no common factor either in the numerator or denominator]

[In a fraction i.e. a number in the form of p/q, ‘p’ is called numerator and ‘q’ is called denominator.]
