Question:     With a speed of 27 km/h, how much distance will be covered by a cyclist in 3 minute 20 second?

Correct Answer  1.5 kilometer

Solution And Explanation

Solution

[Strategy to solve the question: Change the time into second or minute. Then calculate the distance covered in the given time.]

Given,

Speed of the cyclist = 27 km / h

Time = 3 minute 20 second

= 3 × 60 + 20 second = 200 second

Conversion of speed from km/h to m/s

Given, speed = 27 km/h

We know that to convert km/h to m/s, we need to multiply the km/h by 5/18

Thus, 27 km/h

= 27 3 × 5/18 2 m/s

= 3 × 5/2 m/s

= 15/2 m/s

Thus, speed = 7.5 m/s

Calculation of distance covered in the given time using formula

We know that,

Distance = Speed × Time

Thus, distance covered by the given cyclist

= 7.5 m/s × 200 second

= 1500 meter

= 1500/1000 km

= 1.5 km

Thus, distance covered by the cyclist in the given time = 1.5 km Answer

Calculation of distance covered by the cyclist in the given time using Unitary Method

Given,

Time = 3 minute 20 second

= 3 × 60 second + 20 second

= 180 second + 20 second

⇒ Time = 200 second

And, speed = 27 km/h

This, means speed in 60 × 60 second = 27 km

Or, speed in 3600 second = 27 km

Now,

∵ In 3600 second, the distance covered = 27 km

∴ In 1 second, the distance covered = 27 km/3600 second

∴ In 200 second, the distance covered = 27 km/3600 18 second × 200 second

= 27 3 1.5/18 2 km

= 1.5 km

Thus, distance covered by the cyclist in the given time = 1.5 km Answer

Calculation of distance covered without changing the time and km in other than given unit

[But, here we need to either change the speed in km/minute or time into hour. Because without having similar units, the calculation cannot be performed.

So, either we have to convert the speed according to the given unit of time or time into given unit of speed.]

Thus, here we can perform the calculation by changing the hour into minute in the given speed.

Given, speed = 27 km/h

Thus, by converting hour into minute, we can say

The given speed = 27 km per 60 minute

That means, distance covered in 60 minute = 27 km

And, given time = 3 minute 20 second

= 3 minute + 20 /60 minute

= 180 + 20 /60 minute

= 20 0 /6 0 minute

= 20 /6 minute

= 20 10 / 6 3 minute

⇒ Time = 10 /3 minute

Calculation of distance covered in the given time using Unitary method

Now,

∵ In 60 minute, the distance covered = 27 km

∴ In 1 minute, the distance covered = 27/60 km

∴ In 10 /3 minute, the distance covered = 27 9 / 60 6 × 10 / 3 km

= 9 /6 km

= 1.5 km

Thus, distance covered in the given time of 3 minute 20 second = 1.5 km Answer
