Some animals need food comes from plant source. And such animals are called Herbivores. For example: cow, buffalo, deer, etc.

Some animals need meat of other animals as food. And such animals are called Carnivores. For example: tiger, lion, etc.

Some animals eat all types of food, and are called Omnivores. For example: dogs, rats, crows, etc.

Spinach: We eat leaves of spinach plant. Spinach is a vegetable.

Answer: Different animals eat different types of food.

On the basis of food habits, animals can be divided into three types:

(a) Herbivores: Animals that eat only plant and plant products are called herbivores. In other words, grass eating animals are called herbivores. For example: cow, buffaloes, deer, elephant, etc.

(b) Carnivores: Animals that eat only flesh of other animals are called Carnivores. For example: Lion, tiger, etc.

However types of food people do eat in breakfast, dinner and lunch depends upon region they belong to. In India food habit varies from region to region. For example: In West Bengal people are fond of fish curry and rice while in Punjab and Delhi people prefer to eat rajma curry and rice in lunch.

(e) What do you understand by the animal source of food?

Answer: There are many food items we get from animals. For example: fish, eggs, meat, milk, butter, and other milk products.

Thus, food that we get from animals is called food of animal source.

(f) What is ingredient of food? Explain with suitable examples.

Answer: Raw materials used in making of a food item are called ingredient of that food item.

Example: Raw materials used to prepare rice are rice and water. Thus rice and water are ingredients of boiled rice or rice.

To prepare vegetable, generally a particular vegetable, salt, turmeric, chilly, oil and water are used as raw material. Thus these are ingredients for a vegetable.

Raw materials used to prepare rasogulla (a type of sweet famous in West Bengal) are milk, sugar and water. Thus, milk, sugar and water are the ingredients of rasogulla.
