Need and Conservation of Water

Science Four

Conservation of Water

Wise utilization of water and prevent its wastage is called WATER CONSERVATION.

Need of Conservation of Water

Water is the best gift of god for all living things like human being, animals. We cannot live without water and its sources are limit. If we waste water without justification, the amount of water goes on decreasing and a time will come when no would be left. This would result in the form of dying of plants and animals. So we must save water by avoiding its overuse and wastage.

Ways of Conservation of Water

We can avoid wastage of water by follow some good habit.

  • Close the tap after use.
  • Do not keep the tap running while brushing the teeth.
  • Use a mug and bucket to take a bath. Pour water using mug slowly over body to prevent wastage.
  • If there is available use shower. Shower sprinkles water on body slowly and prevents wastage.
  • Do not throw water after washing vegetables, rice or pulses. Use it for watering plants.
  • Get the pipes and taps repaired immediately it there were any leaked.

Water Conservation on Large Scale

We should check over conventional method of irrigation and use water sprinkler for irrigation.

Farmers should use water sprinkler for irrigation. Water sprinkler reduces the wastage of water.

Rain water harvesting

We should collect the rain water in tanks and use it for daily needs. This process is called rain water harvesting.

Preservation of rain water prevents floods. This also checks scarcity of water. Heavy rain fall are often resulting in the form of flood. We can check the floods by construction of dams. Dams also help to preserve large amount of water.

POTABLE WATER

Clean and pure water fit for drinking is called potable water.

We should drink pure and clean water. Impure water makes us sick. Dirty water has germs which cause many diseases like jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera etc. it drink.

Purification of Water

There are many methods of purification of water.

Boiling

Boiling is the most common and easy method of purifying water. It kills germs present in the water.

Filtration

Filtration is one of the oldest methods to purify water. We can filter water through a clean and thin cloth.

In traditional filter water is filtered using sand and charcoal. But in this method only dust and dirt are removed. It does not kill germs.

Today many modern filters are available to purify water. These modern filters remove both dust and other impurities present in water and kills germs.

Chlorination

Adding a small amount of chlorine in water is called chlorination. Chlorination is a method to kill germs and cleaning of water.

Storage of water

Water should be stored in clean containers.

Water containers should be always keep covered.

In rural areas people keep water in earthen pots. However water is kept in containers made of copper, brass, steel, etc. even in villages.

In cities people keep water in buckets, bottles or plastic containers. They also keep water in metals containers.

In cities water is also stored in overhead tanks and underground tanks.

Good habits

  • We should drink clean water.
  • We should stored water in clean utensils.
  • We should always keep our water containers covered.
  • We should not dip our hands in drinking water.
  • We should not drink water which has been stored for many days.
  • We should not waste water and tells our friends to do the same.
