Solved Questions -2

Calculation of Speed when time and distance are given

Question (1) A car covers a distance of 500 kilo meter in 5 hour. Calculate the speed of car.

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 500 km

Time (t) = 5 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 500 km/5 hour

= 100 km/h

Thus, speed of the given car = 100 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the speed of the given car per hour.

∵ In 5 hour the distance covered by the given car = 500 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the given car = 500/5 = 100 km

Thus, speed of the given car = 100 km/h Answer

Question (2) A car covers a distance of 100 kilo meter in 2 hour. Calculate the speed of car.

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 100 km

Time (t) = 2 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 100 km/2 hour

= 50 km/h

Thus, speed of the given car = 50 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the speed of the given car per hour.

∵ In 2 hour the distance covered by the given car = 100 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the given car = 100/2 = 50 km

Thus, speed of the given car = 50 km/h Answer

Question (3) A man covers a distance of 20 kilo meter in 4 hour while walking. Calculate the walking speed of the man.

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 20 km

Time (t) = 4 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 20 km/4 hour

= 5 km/h

Thus, walking speed of the man = 5 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the walking speed of the man per hour.

∵ In 4 hour the distance covered by the man = 20 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the man = 20/4 = 5 km

Thus, the walking speed of the man = 5 km/h Answer

Question (4) If a cyclist covers a distance of 30 kilo meter in 5 hour, what is the speed of the cyclist?

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 30 km

Time (t) = 5 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 30 km/5 hour

= 6 km/h

Thus, speed of the cyclist = 6 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the speed of the given cyclist per hour.

∵ In 5 hour the distance covered by the cyclist = 30 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the cyclist = 30/5 = 6 km

Thus, the speed of the cyclist = 6 km/h Answer

Question (5) If a cyclist covers a distance of 50 kilo meter in 8 hour, what is the speed of the cyclist?

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 50 km

Time (t) = 8 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 50 km/8 hour

= 6.25 km/h

Thus, speed of the cyclist = 6.25 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the speed of the given cyclist per hour.

∵ In 8 hour the distance covered by the cyclist = 50 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the cyclist = 50/8 = 6.25 km

Thus, the speed of the cyclist = 6.25 km/h Answer

Question (6) If a bus covers a distance of 500 kilo meter in 10 hour, what is the speed of the bus?

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 500 km

Time (t) = 10 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 500 km/10 hour

= 50 km/h

Thus, speed of the bus = 50 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the speed of the given bus per hour.

∵ In 10 hour the distance covered by the given bus = 500 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the given bus = 500/10 = 50 km

Thus, the speed of the bus = 50 km/h Answer

Question (7) If a taxi covers a distance of 2000 kilo meter in 25 hour, what is the speed of the taxi?

Solution

Given, Distance (s) = 2000 km

Time (t) = 25 hour (h)

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 2000 km/25 hour

= 80 km/h

Thus, speed of the taxi = 80 km/hour Answer

Alternate Method (Unitary method) to calculate speed when distance and time are given

Since speed is the distance covered in unit hour.

Thus, here we have to find the distance covered in 1 hour, which will be the speed of the given taxi per hour.

∵ In 25 hour the distance covered by the given taxi = 2000 km

∴ In 1 hour the distance covered by the given taxi = 2000/25 = 80 km

Thus, the speed of the taxi = 80 km/h Answer

Solution

Given, Distance (s) from town A to town B = 300 km

Time (t) taken in going from town A to town B = 5 hour (h)

Time (t) taken in coming from town B to town A = 4 hour

Thus, Speed (v) = ?

Speed of the taxi while going from town A to town B

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 300 km/5 hour

= 60 km/h

Thus, speed of the taxi in going from town A to town B = 60 km/hour Answer

Speed of the taxi while coming from town B to town A

We know that, Speed = Distance/Time

Or, v = s/t

Where "v" = Speed, "s" = Distance and "t" = Time

= 300 km/4 hour

= 75 km/h

Thus, the speed of the taxi in coming from town B to town A = 75 km/hour Answer

And the speed of the taxi in going from town A to town B = 60 km/hour Answer
